Focus, Work, and Post. Post two panos to your blog by October 6th. Remember the panos need to be inherently interesting. The idea of story or compositon should "fit" the idea of a panorama. Also, make sure you resize your pano before posting it to the blog. A horizontal measurment of 1000 pixels will give us a good view of the pana without bogging down Blogger.

Three photos need to use someking of blur to convey motion. You can blur the subject or background...attempts at panning will be rewarded.

Three photos need to show "frozen" motion. Althought you are "freezing" motion it still should convey the idea of movement.

Old Sugar Factory

An 8 X 10 photo is to be presented at the beginning of the class period on each of the above dates. Remember seniors, you lucky dogs, don’t go the last week and a half of the trimester…you need to get the last assignment in on May 15th along with the Celebrating the Common Place assignment.

Two of the photos need to matted and the presentation will be part of the overall grade.

We will discuss the particulars of each assignment in class. I will try to teach about a few assignments at a time so you can be looking for several things at once when you venture out to shoot.

I Wish I Had My Camera

Write about an instance when you wished you had your camera with you. I have written about one morning last month when I was sorry I didn't have my camera.

I pulled out of my driveway just before sunrise on my way to work. It was dusk and the light was soft and diffused. In front of me a large semi pulling a heavy trailer began to ascend a small hill. I watched as the truck strained to climb the hill. Large puffs of smoke rolled from the two dual exhaust pipes on each side of the cab. The smoke slowing rose and moved toward the rear of the trailer. As is approached the back of the trailer, the red taillights illuminated the billowing form and both clouds of smoke glowed pink and red. The soft glowing clouds of smoke against the blue predawn sky made an intriguing image. I thought it would be cool to capture the moment.

Egg Assignment

Exercise I T3

Assignment: Arrange several eggs on a white background (poster board or mat board) and photograph them. Try at least one arrangement using 3 eggs. Make as many other arrangements using your own preferences. Use a variety of light sources. Bracket the exposures on all arrangements. Arrange the files in order on the Lacie drive and do not photoshop them!

Goal: Explore the possibilities of repeated simple shape and form, of light and shadow, of white on white. Try to arrange a pleasing composition of the eggs and their shadows. Become aware of shadow quality under various lighting. Finally, learn about exposure by bracketing.

Tips: Try to use a large white board, so you can experiment freely with the composition and viewing angle. Don’t settle for the first shot that comes to mind—explore! Try various arrangements and various angles until you get something you like.

Photos are due first thing Thursday.

Just How Many Grain Elevators/Silos is Enough?

I have had several students lament that the only thing to take photos of around here are grain elevators. They seem to be saying that once you have an image of one that's enough. If you have seen one, you have seen them all. On one hand, I am likely to agree. On the other hand, I think that making an interesting image of something so common over and over again has something to teach a young photographer. As a teacher, I will always enjoy a fresh creative view of something that defines much of the culture we share living in this area. Here is one of my images of two silos. What makes this image a bit different?

Okay! I am putting a photo of a cute kitten on the blog. There is nothing wrong with a cute little subject if there is more to the photograph than just a soft fur ball. In this case, Janessa has a made an interesting composition that strengthens the overall image. The repetition of the wood blocks and the tonal variety are what makes the photo much more than just another cute kitty.

Levels Black and Gray Eyedroppers and Gamma Slider

Here is Aubrie's original photo with the magenta color cast and the photo after a using the eyedropper tools in the levels dialogue box combined with a moderate gamma and highlight slider adjustment. These tools are a great way to remove an unwanted color cast and set a black and white point. In this case, the white eyedropper was not used. I clicked on several spots trying to find a "white" area and always introduced more of a problem than before the click. I opted to just use the highlight slider to raise the tonal values without using the white eyedropper.
